As I said in my previous comment, there are lots of ways of doing this right. For example, we could have pages that would disappear instead be replaced by a short page that explains the page is removed and points to the current documentation of the equivalent or replacement features; these hypothetical "useful 404" (or, more correctly, "useful 410") pages don't even necessarily have to be listed in the table of contents. In fact, serving them with a 410 HTTP status code would be a reasonable thing to do.
