I just wrote some tests using \pset columns to control the output. Having figured out what the point of the patch is I'm pretty happy with the functionality. It definitely is something I would appreciate having. One thing I noticed is that it's not using the formatting characters to indicate newlines and wrapping. I'm trying to add that myself but it's taking me a bit to figure out what's going on in the formatting code.
