I just tried the same thing, but passing CFLAGS="-g -O0" to configure and the xml test passed. Maybe a '\0' termination issue? I also recompiled everything with the defaults again (-O2) and the xml test crashed in the same place. So it is an issue of -O0 works vs -O2 does not.
