I am using postgresql 7.0.2 . This is the first time I
ran into this error. It seemed to me like
whatever(???) triggered the error 'Cannot handle
multiple result groups' messed up all queries which
followed on the same JDBC Connection (I kept getting
'Unknown Response Type').  
Btw, this was on NT, if that matters.
