I found that I had to install SDL to get it to work/compile even if I wasn't
going to use SDL.  I haven't checked if Frederic has found a solution to
this problem yet, but trying to get autogen.sh and ./configure to work
properly without SDL installed failed for me.  Be sure to copy the SDL.m4
from your installation of SDL.  I found mine in the /usr/local/share/alocal/
directory and placed it in the macros directory in my pgserver's directory
that was generated when I untar'ed the tarball.
 
Note:  you do not have to use SDL, or even install it on your target
platform. you just have to have it installed to satisfy the configure and
autogen.sh scripts.  Again, this is what I had to do to make things compile,
and this was 1 month ago, so things may have changed.
