What is the screen like? If it's 4bpp, try just reversing my VR3 patch. The
normal fb driver seems to do some sort of 16 color mode on the VR3 which
doesn't look right on the actual LCD (you end up with about 4 noticeable
colors). For this particular screen, I just changed the color map to 16
shades of gray.
If you're using something that X has been ported to, you might want to see
how they did it. This is the way I got my VR3 fix.
