Another possibility, which worked for me on a PowerMac with framebuffer, is
to use the gpm repeater:

pgserver --input-serialmouse.device=/dev/gpmdata -i serialmouse

Then configure gpm to repeat on a serial protocol (my /etc/gpm.conf reads:
"repeat_type=ms3").
