And I remember a HP network analyser whose GUI was written with Digitalk/V.

But this is work where you go dual: you put your real-time control loop on a core, making sure it will never be interrupted, and you let the soft stuff (GUI and all) outside of the RT loop. There I can see Cog and Smalltalk, not in the inner loop.
