It does *not* work for me either. My setup is Pharo #14140, on Ubuntu
Linux 32bits with a US International keyboard layout. When I press
`Alt+shift+(' I get a parenthesis. However, when I press "Alt+[" I get
the selected output between square brackets (what I expected). Would
it be possible that the Shift key (required to press $(, $), and $")
deactivates the smart-character feature?

With CogVM as follows:

$ CogVM -version
3.9-7 #1 Mon Aug 22 17:40:54 CEST 2011 gcc 4.1.2
Croquet Closure Cog VM [CoInterpreter VMMaker-oscog-IgorStasenko.108]
Linux pharo-build.lille.inria.fr 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5xen #1 SMP Tue Nov
