Dear all, The Amoral Sciences Club (The undegraduate-run sibling of the Moral Sciences Club) is hosting a special event on Monday 20th Feb, with Prof. Jane Heal giving a talk entitled "Science and Psychological concepts". An abstract is given below. The meeting will start at 7.30pm on the 20th, in the Garden Room, Robinson College. The meeting is free for all University members and all are welcome.
'Science and Psychological concepts' - Prof Jane Heal: *Do psychological concepts play the same role as scientific concepts, in enabling us to understand, predict and (sometimes) control the world around us? Analytic philosophy of mind, in part because of its respect for natural science, and also because of it wish to take the mental to be real and causally efficacious, has often proceeded as if the answer is 'yes'. The talk will argue that respect for science itself suggests that the answer to this question might be 'no'. And it offers another account of the role of psychological concepts.* Best wishes, Mat Simpson Amoral Sciences Club President 2011-12 _____________________________________________________ Sent by the CamPhilEvents mailing list.
