Dear all,

Next week, Serious Metaphysics will feature our own Daniel Brigham
presenting "Salvaging Salva Congruitate" (abstract below). As usual, we'll
be meeting at 12pm, and we'll be back to our regular home in the Philosophy
Faculty Board Room.

I hope to see many of you there.

Best,
Emily

Salvaging Salva Congruitate

One half of Wright's (2001, 73) Reference Principle is that co-referring
terms are intersubstitutable salva congruitate in all contexts. Though this
is a compelling thought, Alex Oliver (2005) has recently argued that it is
false, presenting a number of (putative) counterexamples. I argue that if
we accept that terms refer only in the context of a proposition, which,
subject to some qualification, I think we should, then an interpretation of
the salva congruitate claim emerges that is immune to Oliver's
counterexamples. I'll go on to discuss the philosophical importance of
this.
