Cambridge Minorities and Philosophy Annual Conference
Wednesday 13th March, 2019

Theme: Philosophy for Liberation.

Many assume that philosophy has little to contribute in terms of understanding
the struggles and lived experiences of oppressed peoples. Indeed, many areas of
philosophy rely on abstract thought experiments and hypothetical cases which
don’t speak directly to such lived experiences. However, we believe that there
is hope for a liberatory philosophy, i.e. one that is geared towards
addressing, critiquing and dismantling hegemonic systems of power, acting to
support the liberation of oppressed peoples such as women, LGBTQ+ people,
people of colour and disabled people.

At this conference, we aim to showcase work demonstrating the liberatory
capacities of philosophy, showing that philosophy can and should be a tool for
liberation. We also welcome abstracts which address the issue of how the
existing disciplinary structure of philosophy can be antithetical to the goals
of liberation described above.

The organising committee for the MAP Cambridge chapter welcomes abstracts for
25-30 minutes long presentations, followed by 15-20 minutes for questions and
discussion. Undergraduates and graduate students are especially encouraged to
submit.

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words.

Possible topics:
Reflections on social justice and anti-oppression activism
Philosophical critiques of hegemony/hierarchy
Standpoint epistemology and the minority perspective
Provincialising philosophical/scientific knowledge
Decolonising philosophy and other disciplines
Epistemologies of race, disability and/or gender
Philosophies of violence, injustice and/or subjugation

Please submit abstracts by 15th February 2019 to
[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>.
Please ensure that your name does not appear on the submitted abstract; please
include your name and affiliation/course of study on a separate document.

We may be able to secure funding for travel and accommodation bursaries for
those travelling from outside Cambridge. Once we know that these funds are
available, we will let participants know how they can apply for these.

Following the success of last year’s MAP conference on ‘Power and Identity’,
the Cambridge MAP chapter is again holding a one-day conference, as part of our
program of events this academic year intended to further the aims of MAP. As
part of an international organisation with participations from Harvard to
Manchester, each MAP Chapter is united by their broad aims to address (a)
minority issues in the profession, (b) theoretical issues regarding philosophy
of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, disability, native language, etc.,
and (c) philosophy done from minority perspectives.

The intended audience includes academics as well as undergraduate and
postgraduate students from a range of disciplines at Cambridge and London
universities. We are aiming to cover a diversity of areas promoted by MAP, and
are also seeking to foreground speakers committed to carrying out philosophy
from minority perspectives. Additionally, by highlighting the work of
contemporary philosophers of marginalised identities, we seek to secure space
within philosophy for such work to thrive. We hope the conference will be a
productive opportunity for students and researchers working in related fields
to create research networks in an informal and interdisciplinary environment,
and to hear about their colleagues’ work and present their own.

Our conference will implement the BPA/SWIP Good Practice Scheme. We would like
to thank the generous support of the Department of History and Philosophy of
Science, Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Classics at the University of
Cambridge for their continued support of the Cambridge Minorities and
Philosophy chapter.
