The Gem A models (4 distinct variations) are all key wound and the lid doesn't have the slot for the crank (the very first GEM is the drip pan which had no case at all). The B model has a slot up the right side of the lid so you don't have to remove the crank before putting the lid on. There are screws along the sides of the lid that engage with the metal base of the phonograph when tightened to hold the lid on. I can send you pictures if you would like. Gregg Cline
