Loran,
It really is a nice piece.  The finish and detail reminds me of some Asian 
inspired black lacquer work that I've seen in the past.

Thanks, but I didn't troll the stores - this was listed in the newspaper
classifieds the other day. It was a really odd listing, under
"Furniture," and the person was selling a bunch of black lacquer
furniture. Buried in the long text was "Oriental Gramophone." 

Genetta actually spotted the ad, so I blame her ;)
