The 2-55 would be more correct for the time period, but the faux leather 
case is just plain ugly in my opinion.  On the other hand, a VV-50 in 
oak or mahogany would give you the look you're going after - and they 
don't sound half-bad either. Besides, the only thing that's truly 
Orthophonic on the 2-55 is the reproducer; you're still stuck with the 
small horn of a portable.

I'd go with the VV-50. It would only be a few years earlier than the 
car, look nice, and sound good.
