Hi Ryan, I've seen this clip via the internet. Notice his hand shaking? He may have been grasping it too tightly, however it may also have been a black Amberol four minute record. They will self destruct from the warmth of ones hand. Chances are it was not a one of a kind record even if the fellow though it was. I think the clip was discussed here. I'm sure other listers will expand/expound on this topic though.

On there, there was a guy demonstrating an Edison cylinder phonograph (I'm not knowledgeable enough about cylinder phonographs to tell you what model it was). Anyway, he was holding a wax cylinder saying "This is the only one of its kind in the world!!!" And it shattered to pieces in his hand. I'm curious to know what was the cylinder? If it was the "only kind" could it be a home recording? A lost recording of Edison's voice? It wasn't a brown wax or concert cylinder; it looked just like a standard black wax Edison or Columbia cylinder. If it was Cal Stewart, Billy Murray or some "Band," chances are that you'll find another one if you keep your eye out. Although Len Spencer's Edison demonstration record is extremely scarce, I know there are other copies out there, and not the "only one of its kind." I also couldn't catch what the original show it appeared on was. Did anybody know about this? Was there a discussion about it on this list before? (I might have missed it). And who was that guy showing the cylinder? Anyway, a happy new year to all! -Ryan _________________________________________________________________ Working moms: Find helpful tips here on managing kids, home, work - and yourself. http://special.msn.com/msnbc/workingmom.armx _______________________________________________ Phono-l mailing list [email protected] http://t2.cwihosting.com/mailman/listinfo/phono-l_oldcrank.com
