Even when you are linked to a site from an email, you cannot always trust the link. I received an email from (I thought) Earthlink, asking me to update my account information. It all looked very convincing - even took me to a site that ended in "earthlink.htm" - well, I began to fill out the form, and just on a whim decided to contact Earthlink by phone instead - turned out to be a fraud. Unless you go directly to the site's homepage and log-in from there, I would advise against giving out any important information over the web or through email. When in doubt, pick up the phone.
