I almost always ask what the reserve price is because it influences my bidding strategy. I don't like bidding against myself, which is what will happen if I put in a bid that's high enough to meet the reserve, but WAY higher than the amount set by the next lower bidder. If I don't know what the reserve price is, I need to babysit my bid so that I'm bidding against someone.
