If the TD-170 is anything like my TD-180 (about 10 years old or so), there
are no adjustments for things like when/where the auto-return gets
triggered, and I had the same problem you've described.  After unplugging
the motor, I took the platter off and looked at the auto-return gearing to
see exactly which moving part made the mechanism engage when I would move
the tonearm/cartridge toward the spindle.  The moving part was in plain
view, so a small piece of scotch tape later, I was in business.  The
auto-return wouldn't engage again unless I removed the platter and the piece
of tape.  Finally, I could enjoy my Little Wonders!
