The price tag on the machine was $1800.00 and on the other side of the tag
said dealer will take $1400.00.
I went up to the lady who was selling the machine and also she owned the
antique shop, and I told her there were problems with the machine like the
reproducer was bad and the springs were broke only getting about half a full
wind, and the hord was quite weathered. She said she didn't know too much
about the phonograph only that an old lady she got it from was 85 years old
and going into a rest home and only had about 2 weeks to live, so her kids
wanted to get rid of the machine and sold it to her. Not sure what she paid
for it.
I talked it over with my girlfriend for about ? hour and Audra kept telling
me " BUY IT!, BUY IT NOW!.
I went to my car and we drove away, I went ? block, and said what the
heck,,,,, turned around and bought it.

Thanks peter,
I will look into the GoJo cleaner this week.
That sounds easy enough to do.
Many thanks,

to clean the wood, get yourself some GoJo hand cleaner at your local
autoparts store. get the white, non-abrasive kind. (important to get
non-abrasive!)

set down some newspapers and get a couple of rolls of paper towels,
then slather on the gojo. let it sit for about an hour, then wipe it
off with the paper towels. they'll be black. this is decades of dirt
plus cigarette smoke. keep applying gojo and towelling it off til the
towels are clean and you'll be all set. use q-tips to get into
crevices.

I would use 100% cotton cloth (i.e. old white T-shirt) rather than paper

My girlfriend kept telling me to "BUY IT, BUT IT NOW", she kept insisting.
  She loves the phonographs.
I how have to get the springs redone and the reproducer and she's ready to
  play.

WOW, I would call that a spectacular deal! Can't wait to see the pics! There
is a Victor V here locally that I have been drooling over, has a large black
and brass horn, and it is $2200. No cabinet, no nothing.

While we're on the topic of Vic Vs, does $2200 seem fair for a nice one with
large black/brass Victor horn? I haven't looked at purchasing one and am
unfamiliar with the price range on it.
Thanks

Smart lady! To be honest, I probably wouldn't have haggled -- I'd have
sprained my wrist trying to get the wallet out of my back pocket :)
