Dr. Mike Khanchalian (the Cylinder Doctor) does fantastic repairs to cracked
cylinders using heat, dental waxes and tools. He fixed a cracked Sarah
Bernhardt cylinder that I had. Afterwards you couldn't hear the repair. I
highly recommend him, especially if it is a precious cylinder. If you want to
use him, let me know and I can make the connection.

Hello List,
Would like to pass these questions along to everyone.

Is there any way to repair a black (Edison or other) cylinder if they have a
crack?

Is there any way to repair a Blue cylinder that has missing plaster on the
inner edge? Re-shape it so there is no flat spot on the playing side from
the missing plaster. About ½ inch deep and 1 inch long missing on the inside
edge of the beginning song side.

Thanks,
Keith

The cylinders I have are not that expensive.
Thought I could do a repair myself instead of just leaving them sit and
collecting dust.

I once did it by heating a dental tool (you can pick up all shapes and sizes at
flea market tool booths) and touching it to the inside of the crack. Of course
this could potentially make it explode too for all I know, but it worked for
me. I then ran some glue over the repair (between the internal rings of an
Edison cylinder. If yours is smooth inside this will not work).

Well, if anyone is still interested, I am yet in communication with the
Victor VI guy. Now we have an address in France. Is there anyone near Dijon,
France who could research that address? As you can see, I'm just seeing how
much information this guy is willing to give me. Next, it will have to be
determined if there is anything ebay or anyone elso can do.

With the Blue Amberols, if you are only missing only a few small chunks of
plaster you can repair the records fairly easily. I use "1 Time Spackling"
compound from Red Devil. This stuff has a pretty low density and contains a
minimal amount of moisture. Just spread it into the cavity and smooth it
out with your finger. Use some rough grit sandpaper to take out rough spots
after it dries. I've saved several records in my collection by using this
method.

You may be out of luck if you are missing too much plaster. The record's
shape can get too distorted to repair easily. The flat spots you mention
are very frustrating. I toyed with the idea of making some sort of braces
to push out the flat spots while the spackling compound dries. Even if you
managed to smooth out most of the flat spots, you would probably still hear
where they were. If the record is only worth a few dollars, it's not worth
the time and effort.
