Robert,

Many of the Edison varieties go mostly unnoticed, the H had three different
stylus bars over the years, the large tops had four different diaphragms, as he
kept on improving and making attachments to allow the early phonograph to be
updated. Five different upgrade mandrels, two for the home and three for the
triumph. This list goes on and on.

Any corrections or suggestions appreciated.

Steve

There are five varieties of the H and three different stylus bars.

1. Moveable stylus shoulder, elliptical hole that stylus link goes through, and
a V in the weight to keep the stylus from moving too far, and the early stylus
bar that is thinner at the beginning or opposite end of the stylus. A345863 is
the earliest H I know of and it did not have the green. It was NOS. If you
have one earlier, let me know.

2. Fixed stylus bar shoulder, all the rest is the same.

3. Shorter stylus bar all the same thickness except where the stylus is
mounted. Second type of stylus bar it is flat along the top. Round hole in
the weight and no V.

4. Same as above except for having a potmetal top. The potmetal tops appeared
around A930,000. The latest stylus bar appears on this one at some time, but
could have come out earlier.

5. Same as above except around serial number B50,000 the tops say T A Edison
Inc instead of Nat'l phono Co. The stylus bar is not flat along the top, it
now has a half moon cut before the stylus. B99927, an H, is the highest
serial number I have seen in the C H K group. The B C D C H K all shared
serial numbers, but for a while the early B had its own serial numbers and I do
not know if the early C had its own or started out with the B ones. The R and
S shared serial numbers as did the O and N's. Sometimes you will find a
reproducer like this N-56 that has a R and S serial number. 31104 (R&S S/N)
N-56

Model C the first four all have the arm.The first Model C has a blank weight,
an arm, and the serial numbers by the letters and a mica or glass diaphragm. I
would be interested in knowing if anyone has
one with a glass diaphragm as I believe the glass disappeared on the early H
between 10,000
and 18,000, but the mica could have been a replacement and Edison never had
definite cutoffs. The second C has Model-C added to the weight. The third C has
holes added to the weight. The fourth C has the serial numbers around the sound
tube and 653000 is the highest serial number I have seen of this type.
