Actually, it was the Edison Bell Company in London which was offered the Barraud painting. Edison himself never entered into the picture (no pun intended). The legend has it that whomever he spoke to replied "Dogs don't listen to Phonographs."
And yes, you can see the Edison Bell Commercial Phonograph through the painting of the Trade Mark Berliner machine in the original painting (should the management of EMI in Abbey Road deem you worth enough to enter their boardroom. As to the Old Couple painting, Edison did purchase the original painting, but with an Edison Standard painted over an open-works Pathe machine. I do know, however, that the artist did paint copies of it as one showed up in a Christe's London painting auction years ago, quite unrecognized.
