Graham,
I believe when AOL started offering "free" email accounts the little 
adds were added to the email.  I do not think you, the originator, can 
get rid of it without paying for your email service.  I am not 100% on 
this as I have not partaken of AO-Hell since the mid 90s.

As we know, or should know, there is NO free lunch - ever.
