Here is an interesting News Article that I turned up from the Archives of the New York Times circa 1917, regarding the death of Nat M. Wills the famous comedy star on many records in the early 1900's, perhaps best known for "No News or What killed the Dog". I always wear gloves and safety glasses. It is best to eat a good meal before doing this, and be of good physical condition. Triumph and Diamond disc springs are very powerful, I usually round the end of the mainsprings spring so it hooks easier, many new springs have an almost triangle shaped end (if it is the kind with the pear shaped hole. ) The hook ones for Victors are pretty easy, do not round these. I also use needle nose vice grips to hold the spring to the outer hook, once it is hooked and then wind the spring in from hand to hand. The outer coils are the hardest, and if you do it right the center coils fall in with a small push. The springs are most dangerous when you are putting the first coils in and it slips off the rivet, this is when it can fly and hurt you. I have used a stump outside with a vice with v jaws bolted to it, and I could walk with the spring aroud the barrel and coil it in with one hand holding the mainspring and the other over the barrel stuffing it in. If you are starting with springs I suggest something like a Victrola IV spring. Shawn Borri _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live? Seems with the knowledge base in this group we'd have a whole how-to section on youtube and have pdfs with step-by-step instructions. -- Thatcher Thomas Edison wrote: > > I have installed hundreds of mainsprings.
