Auction format selling has never been, is not now, and never will be a
completely rational process. However, as you point out, auction selling
can be interesting and can provoke curiosity for sellers, bidders, and
observers.

sold for $229.49. So many people put things on eBay at top dollar and
wonder why no one bids. There was even one item that had a buy it now
for $75 and a starting bid of $9.99. At the first bid the buy it now went
away and it sold for close to $100.
