I've used Xajax library with PHP and it's very nice and easy to use. It's high-level, so if you want to learn the nuts and bolts, it's not a good place to start, but if you just want to make something work, it's great.

Can someone please suggest a good pHP/Ajax tutorial?

 Use mootools, http://mootools.net/

Best JS library around, does all sorts of neat AJAXy animations as well as
 handling the backend cross-browser.
