Not necessarly. It does make sense to use transparent compression only
for dynamically created pages, so that static pages can be cached.

And if you are a user of a mid sized hoster and want to have
compression, you only have to persuade your hoster to switch a php.ini
entry (or use .htaccess), not to persuade him to install yet another
Apache module ;-).
