Hmm, what about GD or IMAP? AFAIK most hosters support those. And who is talking about moving all extensions to PECL? Sure, a lot of them can be moved (once it's ready), but nobody proposed moving everything there. It's really not about being "determined on what you personally want" but it's about common sense.
