No, not really. It was noted by more than one person that it breaks 
some simple things in PHP, affecting the bahavior of scripts that are 
already out there. Until it is totally stable (which you yourself it is 
not yet) it should not be enabled by default. How, after 4.3 is branched 
you were going to merge the mbstring dev thing on sourceforge into PHP 
CVS and then we can enabled it by default for PHP 5. This will get a lot 
of good testing, and then IMO the mbstring module should be integrated 
even more and replacing the things in PHP that mbstring now "changes".
