i like "Professional PHP Programming" from Wrox ... don't bother with "Beginning PHP Programming" from Wrox ... it'll probably insult your intelligence ... one of the first i ever read, when i was first getting started, was "PHP Essentials" by Meloni ... simple, but some GOOD examples to study, and when you finish, you'll have a decent foundation for more study .. my current personal favorite is "Mastering PHP 4.1" from Sybex ... good writing style, and it covers (obviously) 4.1, which a LOT of books out don't do ... so it eliminates THAT frustration ...
