Please research the difference between a single quote and a double quote.
Also, you can use the operator .=(dot + equal) in this manner:

            if(!empty($_POST['fname'])) {
                $msg .= "$lname\n";
            } else if(!empty($_POST['lname'])) {
                $msg .= "$lname\n";
}
