I did this myself, for the exact same reason.  First I define this
javascript in my page:

function itsThinkingOpen() {


function itsThinkingClose() {

and then at the beginning of the page, before the search begins, in php I
  echo "<script>itsThinkingOpen()</script>";

and after the code to search the database I put
  echo "<script>itsThinkingClose()</script>";

It works fine here.
