It is ALWAYS preferable to have the user choose the username FIRST, then
pay. That way they have taken posession of a 'good' so to speak, for which
they must pay. If they pay BEFORE they choose, they may be unable to find
a username they want, and then they want their money back... and you deal
withchargebacks and the inherant prblems that brings... :(

Also, I would have the pay for membership as an 'outside' module in your
flow, rather than a step required before logging in. this way you can let
people 'try for 30 days' or something like that, and then after the trial
period, they can choose to pay.
