When HTTP_REFERER works it shows the page which contained a link to your site that was followed by the web visitor. When you use ErrorDocument, the content of the file simply replaces the missing content of the page requested. You can see the page requested with PHP_SELF or SCRIPT_NAME. The SERVER_NAME will identify the domain name requested in the URL. If you wanted to catch the GET variables then REQUEST_URI or QUERY_STRING are helpful.
