This is the point exactly. A VERY good thing, because there is no
duplication of content.  

In fact, the search engines would never see our "short links", as they
always are given out over the phone, or by email, and never appear in
the web pages anywhere.

This is already done elsewhere, but the original question was one of
redirection based on something in the URL.  

In our case, we have developed a system to allow people deep into our
web pages, with a simple URL that can be given out over the phone 

You can say
http://hahomes.com/348
over the phone, it is a little more difficult to give the full "correct"
URL of 
http://www.fourwood.com/foursale/showdetail.php?pr=348&S=105
... and much more likely to be accurately typed in. 

It has nothing to do with missing pages.  Try
http://www.hahomes.com/nopagehere.html
That works, and it sends me an email to say that someone tried to find a
missing page.

I could probably do it with .htaccess now, but I didn't know enough
about htaccess in those days, and now - if it ain't broke... <G>
