Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried using SaveAs(...) in
addition to Save(), to no avail.  Excel still stays resident.

This is my "end" sequence, when i'm all done processing
the spreadsheet.  Can anyone see any flaws or errors in
what i'm doing ??

$book->Save(); 
$book->Close();
unset($sheet);
unset($book);
$excel->Quit();
com_release($excel);
unset($excel)

I agree with a previous poster to this list; that it's
most likely an "undocumented" MS bug (are there any
other kinds of MS bugs? hehe)
