I haven't tried this but suspect you'd get some mileage trying
$_SERVER['AUTH_USER'] and $_SERVER['REMOTE_USER']
in PHP 4.1.0 or later or
$HTTP_SERVER_VARS['AUTH_USER'] and $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['REMOTE_USER']
prior to PHP 4.1.0
