Alas, none of these will work--I checked with phpinfo() and the variable
I am looking for is not there.  It can get information from the server,
but not the client.  I don't think there is a way to do this with
PHP...darn it.  Thanks though.

        I haven't tried this but suspect you'd get some mileage trying
        
        $_SERVER['AUTH_USER'] and $_SERVER['REMOTE_USER']
        in PHP 4.1.0 or later or
        $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['AUTH_USER'] and
$HTTP_SERVER_VARS['REMOTE_USER']
        prior to PHP 4.1.0
