well, xt couldn't handle the html stylesheets either (sigh), but i was
able to get it to produce the manual.fo and then use fop to get a pdf out
of that. the pdf has problems, but it did seem to at least work. (and it
was really damn fast compared to generating any of our other versions
right now.)

it doesn't seem to generate a table of contents, which is a real bummer. it
also isn't nearly as pretty as the 'official' pdf version of the manual.
