Sorry, but this is one where the original was better English. Although the additional "access" is not syntactically incorrect, it makes the sentence read awkwardly and I doubt many native English speakers would include it.
I thought this sentence was missing something :) What about "just as you would do it for the elements of an <type>array</type>" ?
