Here is a patch which addresses most of concerns raised by Olga/Alan.
Alan - I haven't done anything to deal with hanging streaming processes... it
is hard to come up with a suitable timeout since it is very difficult to
predict what will work for everyone. This is similar to what we went through
with Hadoop Streaming, and that landed up with the exact behaviour in this
patch. Can we continue discussions while we commit this patch and revisit it in
subsequent iterations?
