Can Pike 8.0 drop string_to_unicode/unicode_to_string?

No. Nothing gets dropped from 8.0 at this point. If they should be
dropped in the future we could still potentially mark them as
depricated in 8.0.

I'm not sure I understand your objection to them though. Is it just
that they are redundant?
