Hm, upgrading from the pike-7.8.866 ebuild gave me the follwing
messages:

 *
 * Installation of a directory is blocked by a file:
 *   '/usr/lib64/pike/modules/__builtin.pmod'
 * This file will be renamed to a different name:
 *   '/usr/lib64/pike/modules/__builtin.pmod.backup.0000'
 *
 *
 * Installation of a directory is blocked by a file:
 *   '/usr/lib64/pike/modules/System.pmod'
 * This file will be renamed to a different name:
 *   '/usr/lib64/pike/modules/System.pmod.backup.0000'
 *

It didn't prevent the installation from succeeding, but I'm now left
with two obsolete files in /usr/lib64/pike/modules/...
