it's the 'localstatedir' parameter of the configure script. By
default it's PREFIX/var, by default PREFIX is /usr/local
Usually I configure my systems as
./configure --prefix=/usr/local --localstatedir=/var ...
perhaps in piler.conf. Recently it became obsoleted, that's why you
got
a warning.
Yes, it's in piler.conf. I followed the docs carefully. :-) I have
commented it out now.
I'll update the upgrade docs, and add this hint soon.

the archive. Could this be a possible localstatedir issue?
I see that you don't have

but do you have
/var/piler/store/d1/2e/82/4000000050ec8c2c1ac77ddc0b6f59d12e82.m OR
/var/piler/store/50e/2e/82/4000000050ec8c2c1ac77ddc0b6f59d12e82.m?
