Another hint to get this right; get yourself a 'serial line port
monitor' it's a small and inexpensive device with 9 LED's on it (typical
green/red dual color leds), and it shows immediately if something is
wrong with the wiring, and even if the port is active, and (for low
speeds) if data is 'flowing' through the wire ! It helped me in
choosing the right cable.
