TealDoc - Reads plain DOC files, but has its own HTML-like tags
for rich formatting and graphics.
Peanut Reader - Reads plain DOC (recent versions only) but has
its own encrypted format for payware ebooks.
TomeRaider - Reads plain DOC, has its own format
WordSmith - Reads and writes plain DOC and memos, has its own
format for rich formatting.
MobiPocket - Reads plain DOC, has what is essentially its own
format for rich formatting and graphics. Format is built from
the Open EBook spec. The "filetype" is the same as a plain DOC
but there's lots of XML tags and stuff in it.
iSilo - Reads only its own format
Docs To Go - Reads plain DOC files, has its own format for
converting MSWord docs
BookWormie, PanaRead, and iambic Reader I'm not really sure of
but the info available at http://www.memoware.com/mw-helpf.htm
leads me to believe that they may support some format of their
own in addition to DOC.
And I forgot Plucker from the original list. I think it only
does its own format. And it's open source.
The thing is, they ALL have neat features or good reasons
to get 'em. TomeRaider is gaining a lot of content due to
the contests they're running or ran (see www.memoware.com).
iSilo has slick converters from HTML and integrates nicely
with sitescooper. MobiPocket content is in the Open Ebook
format (see www.openebook.org). Peanut Reader (recently
acquired by Palm) has good payware content. WordSmith has
bi-directional conversion with RTF format and is the closest to a
word processor/MS-Word exchange tool we've got on the Palm.
The problem is getting worse, not better.
Don't mean to unload on you about this, just happened to be the
straw as the old saying goes.
