          could IR be timed for a returned bounce, and, determine distance from Palm 
to a remote object ...?

   Of course.  And, with the speed of light being 3x10^8 meters per
   second, if you can time it with microsecond accuracy you can measure
   the distance to the nearest 100 meters.
