Well, the problem is that "the web" is quite a vague target... I mean
you can use HD resolutions or size down, you can do streaming WebM or
streaming MP4, export for youtube or vimeo, etc.
The only stuff I typically use is:
- webm{vp8+vorbis} for HTML5 video
- matroska{x264enc+aac} for Youtube
In the case of Youtube, since they're going to re-encode the thing
afterwards anyway, I keep the resolution and bitrate to the maximum
(while trading off filesize and upload times).
In the case of HTML5 video on my own server, I usually size down to
720x* or less and play with bitrate or quality to have a decent
filesize...
But other that no, there is no such chart. I'd love to have a clear one
that I could include in the documentation (I obviously know a bit too
much about video encoding, so I don't experience the issue as strongly
as the average joe, and as such, if I wrote such documentation, it would
be biased and woefully incomplete).
