I did not get the original message!  Get those antibodies tested TOO!!!  Hashimotos will show up years before the hormones will go out of whack and it will and can cause the thyroid to enlarge - IF (and that's a big IF) you test positive and can find a doctor to treat you with a low dose of thyroid hormone before becoming hypo you can slow the progression of the disease and severity of the disease - studies in Europe have shown this - US doctors however discount it (you have to hit them over the head with a 2 x 4 or a ton of bricks to get them to see anything outside the narrow little box they live in).

And yes the Free T4 and Free T3 are usually the first to go -- way before the TSH goes out of line.  And after you start treatment - Docs usually live and die by the TSH, but that is usually again the last to respond to changes and is not a good indicator of what's going on - ESP. if you have pituitary problems - it is almost worthless as a indicator.  The Free T4 and Free T3 are the actual thyroid hormones and tell the real story of what hormones are in your blood stream and available to your cells to use.  If they don't test these - they have NO CLUE as to what your body has to use.

MJ - who has found out the hard way in the past 6 years how the thyroid operates in her quest for better health.  Fortunately, I had an easier time with my pituitary tumor - Knocking on wood here it stays that way!!!

Carmen, I hope everything is o.k. MJ is a stickler for reminding me about t4, t3, free t4, free t3 and TSH. Just becasuse TSH is normal, doesn't mean you are or are not hypothyroid in a pituitary patient!

Keep us posted!
